As
always when handling or dealing with chemical products care
should be taken to protect both the operator and those around.
It is important that all data sheets and Manufacturer Safety
Data sheets (MSD's) are read and complied with.
Avesta Finishing Chemicals have
issued a general guidance note for the safe use of their range
of chemical pickling products. This Personal Protection Equipment
(PPE) leaflet is issued as a supplement to the application
data and MSD sheets.
The safety leaflet illustrates the type of protection needed
for different "levels" of risk, whether "light"
or "heavy" pickling. Nevertheless you will see that
in all instances the operator is wearing acid / water resistant
wellingtons, acid / water resistant boiler suit, acid / water
resistant gauntlets and some form of face protection, minimum
a full-face visor (light pickling). When the operation is
considered heavy the operator is sporting a full-face respirator
and either a cape or a boiler suit complete with hood to protect
the whole head area.
Note: Not any respirator will do; you need
to ensure that the CORRECT FILTER(S) are fitted to deal with
the fumes / gases in question. Always consult the MSD sheets
and if still uncertain consult the manufacturer, or your local
PPE expert, for advice. DO NOT take unnecessary risks. These
fumes can HARM and even KILL a person if in the right concentration.
Note: It is important that a full risk assessment
is conducted before the start of any pickling operation. If
you are uncertain of how to conduct a Risk assessment SRL
will be happy to help and indicate some of the risks involved
from its use and experience with these products.

for the Avesta Finishing Chemicals pickling products.
